Josephine has performed internationally as a soloist and chamber player. She made her BBC Proms Concerto debut in 2005 with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and has since performed with premier orchestras around the globe. She has collaborated with many of the most distinguished conductors of our time, to include; Sir Colin Davis, Sir Mark Elder, Edward Gardner, Richard Hickox, Andris Nelsons, Vasily Petrenko, and Sir Antonio Pappano.
Renowned for her versatility and depth of artistry, Josephine has recorded extensively for major labels such as EMI Classics, Deutsche Grammophon, Chandos, and Orchid Classics. Her discography reflects her commitment to both the classical and innovative interpretations, earning critical acclaim from international audiences and reviewers alike.
Josephine is a regular presence at the world’s foremost music festivals, including Bath, Beethoven, Cheltenham, Gstaad, Mecklenburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Salzburg, Schloss Elmau, and Savannah, as well as the BBC Proms. Her performances at iconic venues such as Wigmore Hall, Aldeburgh, Petworth, Newbury, and the Stavanger International Chamber Music Festival have further cemented her reputation as an artist of exceptional caliber. She has also appeared at Casa da Música in Porto and the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf.
Josephine’s influence extends beyond the stage into academia and pedagogy. She holds the esteemed Alfredo Piatti Chair in Cello and serves as Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music, London. A dedicated and sought-after educator, she is frequently invited to give masterclasses at major conservatories and festivals around the world, mentoring the next generation of cellists.
Her own musical journey reflects a commitment to excellence. She trained at Yale University and the Juilliard School in the United States under the tutelage of the legendary Aldo Parisot. At the Royal Academy of Music, she studied with David Strange, winning all the major cello prizes and she was then selected as one of only nine international cellists, to study with the esteemed Mischa Maisky at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Italy.
Josephine has held orchestral positions with the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the English Chamber Orchestra and she is regularly invited to play principal cello with all the major leading orchestras in the U.K.
In recognition of her achievements and contributions to the field of classical music, Josephine was unanimously elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music: an honour that underscores her standing as a prominent musician and educator in the classical world.
